Sixty

Welcome to my 60th post for the month of May 2008. I can't believe that I've had that much to say this month. I guess I can give some credit to this never ending blog contest I am still competing in. There have been a few days that I really could have just skipped blogging, but my competitiveness won out in the end. It was those days that I had so much to say that I just kept on posting that put me up to the 60-post mark, though.

For those of you loyal readers who have read each and every one of my posts this month, including the less entertaining ones, I thank you very much! Hopefully, next month won't be boring so often, with the girls being out of school and all.

Today's Take

Well, it was a long, slow day working my yard sale. I parted with my double-stroller for $50. I practically gave away two working TVs for $5 each. But, the most heart-breaking thing for me was when I accepted a man's offer to buy my Gone with the Wind porcelain plate collection for only $20. It still makes me sick to think about it.

On the bright side of things, we did make enough money to pay for Sarah's first session of Orchestra Camp. And we still have tons of stuff to sell tomorrow. And next weekend if we need to.

Scattergories

So, I got tagged by Karlise to play this little word game.

SCATTERGORIES. . .It's harder than it looks! Copy and paste into a new blog. When you are done, post a comment on my page.

Too Nice?

It's just after noon now, and most of my garage sale stuff is still out in my yard. We've sold a couple of little things, but only one of my high dollar items has sold. It almost killed me to let my gorgeous double stroller go for only $50.

I've had several people comment on how nice my stuff is. Is it possible that my stuff is too nice? Is that why it's not selling? Because people who go to garage sales aren't really looking to get a good deal on something nice, but would rather buy junk? Maybe so.

So, I guess we'll be out here again tomorrow. Hopefully we'll sell more then. But since Sundays are notoriously slow for garage sales, we'll probably be out here again next weekend, too. Oh, joy.

Still Here

I'm still here. Still working on preparing for the big day tomorrow. I could stay up all night doing this, but if I did, I'd be a zombie tomorrow, and that wouldn't do anyone any good. So, I'm going to wrap this up in a few minutes and head on to bed. Hopefully, I'll get up early enough to finish up in the morning.

Bee

I should be pricing and organizing the stuff for my yard sale tomorrow, but instead, I am stuck watching the Scripps National Spelling Bee. I'm not one to really care about these sort of things, but like just about any other reality show, it has sucked me in. Darn it!

Update: Congratulations, Sameer Mishra on winning the Bee!

Preparations

Tomorrow is the big day. We are finally going to have our big yard sale. Well, maybe not such a big yard sale, but we will definitely have quite a few very nice, top dollar items for sale. We pretty much got rid of all of our nickel and dime stuff when we hauled a bunch of stuff off to Goodwill just before the new year.

I am finally getting rid of my barely used double stroller, as well as Katie's old pink stroller. I want to get her a new stroller because the pink one is just too difficult to keep clean. I also have a bunch of her outgrown clothes and toys, too.

We will also have some large appliances and electronics available, too. We are putting out our old dishwasher, and my mother is donating a couple of televisions and a nearly new clothes washer that was her mother's.

And of course, we'll have the usual fare of clothing, bicycles, board games, books, and collectibles. Oh, and I think we'll have some outdoor furniture available, too, unless Phil decides that he wants to keep it for some reason.

So, wish us luck with our yard sale. We are hoping that we make enough money tomorrow to pay for Sarah's Orchestra Camp. If you're in our area, feel free to stop by and say, "Hi."

F*cktard of the Week

Dear Mr. Motorcycle Man,

When you come to a four-way stop, or any stop sign really, you are supposed to actually come to a stop. A complete stop, in fact. You most definitely are not supposed to just roll on through it. Especially when it is my turn to go through the intersection.

Did you not notice that I was in a car? A car that could have easily crushed you if I hadn't hit my brakes to avoid hitting you? How stupid do you have to be to run a stop sign on a motorcycle?

Grow a brain and pay attention next time, F*cktard!

Emily's Awards

This morning was Emily's Fifth Grade Awards Ceremony. My mother, Katie, and I were all in attendance. Emily received a certificate for being in the school chorus. She also received two very special awards - one for having excellent behavior all year, and one for making the Honor Roll all year. Not only has Emily made the Honor Roll all year, but she has actually made straight A's so far this year, and we are hoping that she will continue the trend with her final report card.

In this first photo, Emily is receiving her award for making the Honor Roll.

Here is Emily showing off her awards.

This is Emily with her friend, Katherine. They have been friends since meeting in Girl Scouts while in kindergarten.

Here Emily poses with her teacher. Sarah and Emily both had this same teacher for fifth grade, and we really love her a lot.

And, of course, Emily had to get a big squeeze in with her baby sister before she headed back to class.

Congratulations on a wonderful fifth grade year, Emily!

Mad Dash

The end of the school year is fast approaching, and now the mad dash to complete everything is on. For Emily, it's not so bad. She has already finished up her soccer season and has completed everything to earn her Girl Scout awards. And while I haven't told her this (because its a big secret at school), her teacher has already had to turn in her grades for the nine weeks, so there is really no more pressure on her school work anymore.

Sarah, on the other hand, not only has to catch up on some missed school work, but she has to complete a few requirements for her Girl Scout Silver Award as well as study for her school exams. I know she is feeling a lot of pressure from all of this, and that probably has to something to do with her bad attitude lately.

I am looking forward to a nice, relaxing summer vacation. And the girls probably are, too!

Mother Knows Best

Last night I had a long talk with Sarah. She has been complaining a lot lately about having to clean her room and do chores. She says that other children, for example her friends, don't have to clean their rooms or do any chores.

Of course, I had to explain to her why she has to do chores, and how doing those chores will help to prepare her for life. I explained to her how making her clean, and do laundry, and do the dishes, etc., would make it easier for to live on her own. And all of her friends who have never been taught how to do these things will be completely clueless when they go out on their own.

I also explained to her how not getting her way all of the time will prepare her for future denials. I once read in a psychiatric magazine about how all of these parents who let their children do and have whatever they want are doing such a disservice to them. When these children grow up and go out into the real world, they don't know how to cope with failure and denial. If they don't get that job or promotion that they want, they don't know how to deal with it, and usually end up depressed and needing medication and/or therapy.

We also discussed why it is so very important for her to do well in school. Not only does she need a strong work ethic, but she needs to do as much as she can to pad her college resume. The better she does in school, the better colleges she will be accepted to, and the more scholarships she'll earn to help pay for school. And since she says she wants to go to medical school, she's really going to need all the help she can get paying for it.

She said she understood everything I said to her, and that she agreed that I am only doing what is best for her and her future. Of course, I'm sure all of that will go right out the window the next time she doesn't get her way!

Booger?

No, that's not a booger on the end of Sarah's finger. It's an inch worm! While waiting outside for our table at the Olive Garden Friday evening, we encountered a few little inch worms. So, Sarah decided to pick one of them up and play with it while we waited.

And for those of you wondering, yes, I did make her wash her hands before we ate dinner.

Mobile Blogging

Here I am, once again, blogging from the interstate. We drove to Ocala to spend Memorial Day with my mother and former/future step-father. Yes, that's correct - former AND future step-father.

My mother and step-father (we'll just leave off the former/future labels) have already been married to and divorced from each other twice. But, after many years, they are finally back together again and planning to remarry. Some people may be skeptical about them getting remarried, but not me. Now that she is older and in her fifties, I think my mother realizes that she is no spring chicken and it's finally time to settle down. And you know, the third time's the charm, right?

So, anyway, we had a really good day. It was nice and relaxing, and the weather couldn't have been more perfect. I got to see my ex-con former/future step-brother for the first time in many, many years, and meet his two youngest children, who are a couple of gorgeous little girls, by the way. I also got to meet his "babymama", who was very quiet, but seemed nice enough. My step-brother was in and out of prison for many years, but he seems to have finally gotten his life together and is a regular upstanding citizen now.

I played a nice game of horseshoes with my step-brother, my uncle, and some big, burly tattoo-covered man whose name escapes me right now. I didn't do very well at first, but I eventually got up to speed. I just hadn't played horseshoes in a long time and not on the full forty foot set-up. I do have a funny feeling, though, that I may have a sore arm tomorrow when I wake up. Hopefully, not though.

Well, we're pulling into our neighborhood now, so I must sign off. I will say, though, that blogging on long car trips certainly makes the time go by rather quickly.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone! Remember to take the time to pray for our soldiers who have given their lives for our country. We truly do live in the Land of the Free, because of the Brave.

Swimsuit Shopping

Yesterday, we ended up going to the mall to shop for swimsuits for Sarah and Emily. I had planned on ordering their swimsuits online from Old Navy, but Sarah started complaining about not wanting to wear a tankini because they "don't fit her right", and she "really, really" wanted to get bikinis instead. So, we hopped into the car and headed to Old Navy so the girls could try on the swimsuits.

I told the girls that there was no way that I would be ordering bikinis for them unless I was sure that they would fit properly. No daughter of mine is going to be going around with a bikini top that doesn't fit her properly and cover all of the necessary areas. After trying everything on, Emily decided not to get a bikini and instead got two of the swimsuits I had already picked out for her online. Sarah only found one bikini that she liked, so she got it plus two tankinis that she didn't deem "horrible."

Emily got these two swimsuits:

Sarah got these three swimsuits:

I never would have guessed that Sarah would pick out the pink swimsuit. She's not really a pastel or pink kind of girl anymore. But, she said that once her summer tan comes back, the pale colors will show it off quite nicely.

Edited to Add: I forgot to mention that all of these swimsuits were on sale for only $10 each. So awesome!

Saturday Quiz

My lovely daughter, Sarah, sent me this link to a quiz she and her classmates were working on in her Geography class yesterday. Obviously, it is a Geography quiz. The particular link she sent me brought up a map of the United States and it asks you to click on the state that it gives you. It's actually a very forgiving quiz. You get three tries to locate each state, and you are awarded three points for getting it correct on the first try, two points if it takes you two tries, and one point if you get it on your third try.

My husband, who thinks I "suck" at Geography, was shocked that I scored so high (I missed one point because I got Indiana and Illinois mixed up the first time). He couldn't even come close to my score, though.

After I finished that quiz, I decided to try out the Central America quiz. I actually amazed myself with how well I did on my first try. I got 39 out of 42 points. I think I must have learned where most of the Central American countries are from watching hurricane reports on the news during the summer months! I know that's the only reason I knew where Belize was.

So, go ahead and test your Geography skills. And if you don't do so well, keep working on it until you feel good about yourself again.

More on Emily

Emily played her final game of the Spring soccer season this morning. Unfortunately, her game was at 10:00 and Katie's swimming lesson was at 10:20, so I couldn't go watch her play.

However, from what I hear, her team played great today. They played against the same team that they played against in their first game of the season. In the first game, Emily's team lost by two points. This time, Emily's team won by two points. Emily's coach said that just shows how much the team has improved over the course of the season.

Congratulations, Mini Mob!

Watch Out for Those Chips

Emily was eating some chips and salsa with her lunch this afternoon. All of a sudden, after taking a bite, she starts getting all excited and squealing (because she had food in her mouth still) and pointing. Apparently, she bit the chip just the right way to cause her to lose a tooth!

Yes, that is a filling in the tooth. When Emily was little, for some reason her teeth were very soft, and she kept getting cavities in them until she was almost four years old. She has since had no more cavities, and all of the teeth that she did have the cavities in will be falling out and replaced by permanent teeth eventually.

I Tried

You know, I tried. I really, really tried. I thought it would be in the best interest of my two older daughters if I could get along with their step-mother. Even though they barely spend any time with her, and she has no influence in their lives, I thought it would still be nice. I truly do not like to have negative feelings about anybody. But some people just make being nice to them impossible.

It's one thing to have the gall to selfishly spend my children's child support money. It's is a completely different thing to try to control my children's relationship with their father. My children should be able to communicate with their father without going through her. Why should they have to worry about her reading their letters to their father? Or even worse than that, discarding their letters and telling their father that they just don't care enough to write to him?

And on the child support issue, the Army, for some reason (most likely the ex's fault), did not take out the child support payment from their father's paycheck, which was deposited into the step-mother's bank account. So, what did she do? Not what she should have, which is turn around and pay the child support out of the paycheck. Nope, she decided the money was hers to do with as she pleased. When she was "informed" of the error, she decided that all she could be bothered to give up was a measly $100, which the state still has not received.

I could go on and on about how my children have been mistreated and slighted ever since their father hooked up with this girl, but I won't. I'd probably end up with carpal tunnel syndrome if I did. Of course, in all honesty, she doesn't deserve all of the blame here. If my ex was any kind of real man, any kind of real father, he wouldn't put up with this kind of selfish behavior from his wife, or wouldn't have hooked up with someone like that in the first place. If he were any kind of real father, he would put the needs of these girls first.

Good Morning

I had a really good morning today. Even though I was woken up late, I still managed to get Emily to school on time, and I managed to get a shower and wash my hair, too. Katie was in a good mood, and we went to meet up with our friends at Mimi's Cafe for brunch. It was a really nice meal and we had a really good time.

After brunch, since Katie was in a good mood and we had nowhere else to be right away, we went to Babies 'R Us to see if they had any of Katie's bedding accessories available. Katie's bedding set has been discontinued, and we aren't finished decorating her bedroom yet, so I am desperately scrambling to try to pick up the last few pieces I need to complete her room. I managed to get a set of wall decorations for Katie's room, and I picked up the last roll of wall border so that I'll have it in case I want to make my own decorations using pieces of it.

After our little shopping trip, we headed back home. Katie was thoroughly worn out, although still in a great mood, and ready for her nap. So, I laid her down in her crib, and she told me, "Night-night," and drifted off to sleep. This was definitely the best morning in a while.

Twisted

Well, my back is feeling a little better today, but it's still hurting some. I had Phil shake me out last night before I went to bed. Basically, he picks me up off of the floor and gives me one good shake so that they bones in my back that are all smooshed together can separate and go back to where they are supposed to.

Unfortunately, from the pain that I am feeling, I think that maybe some of my ribs are twisted together again. So, I'm pretty sure that I'll need to go see my doctor for an adjustment. My doctor is not a chiropractor, but she does wonders with my back and ribs. Phil put his back out once and she fixed him right up, too.

Pain

My back is KILLING me. Literally, I think I could die from this pain. I've had this pain in my back all day long, and it's not getting any better. And it hurts like someone is stabbing me whenever I dare to breathe any deeper than very shallowly. Because I can't breathe very deeply, I feel like I'm on the verge of passing out from the lack of oxygen.

I should probably go to the doctor, but I'm really in too much pain to have to deal with taking Katie out in public. And I'm still hoping it will just go away on its own. I'll give it until Friday to go away. If it's not gone by then, I'll go to the doctor. I'd hate to be in pain over the long holiday weekend, too.

Local Celebrity

Katie is quite the popular little toddler. It seems that wherever we go, people recognize her. Yesterday, when I was waiting to sign Sarah in to school, one of the faculty/staff at Sarah's school walked by us and said, "I recognize this beautiful little girl. Isn't she the one who was walking through the halls signing her ABC's?" Apparently, she makes quite the impression on people.

So, today when Emily brought home her school yearbook, I really wasn't all that surprised to find a photo of Katie in it. I guess I'm not the only one who can't resist taking photos of her!

Coincidentally, when Emily was in kindergarten, a photo of her ended up in the local high school's yearbook, too.

Update on Mom

Mom was released from the hospital this evening. She's feeling much better now. They're not exactly sure what was causing her chest pains, but they think that maybe she was having heart spasms. They tried a new anti-spasm medication on her last night, but on the lowest dose, it gave her a massive headache, so they decided that she didn't really need it.

They did do another echocardiogram yesterday, and the cardiologist today said that it showed improvement over the one they did when she was in the hospital last month. And they decided that she no longer needed to take one of her water pills that they had her on. So, all in all, it's actually pretty good news today.

Oh, and Katie decided that she really needed some oxygen while we were visiting my mother today. This kid is such a ham!

Back to the Hospital

She's back! Yep, Mom's back in the hospital again. Thankfully, she's nowhere near as sick as she was when she went into the hospital last time.

Mom started feeling some pains in her chest yesterday, so she took her Nitroquick (like her doctor told her to) and they went away. But, a little while later, they came back again, and the Nitroquick didn't help the second time.

So, she called her doctors and they told her to go to the ER to get checked out. Since the ER doctor didn't have a clue what was going on with her, he decided to admit her and have her seen by the cardiologists.

So, the cardiologists decided today to try a new medication on her. Since they don't know how she will react to it, they are keeping her overnight again to see what happens. Hopefully, she'll be released tomorrow.

Diaper Head

Katie has a new funny habit. She likes to go into her room and find a Huggies Pull-Up, with easy-open sides, and pull one side open and then put the diaper on her head like a little bonnet. She so cute when she does it, but it's getting really annoying that she's going through so many pull-ups.

Luckily, Katie's swim instructor, who potty-trained her daughter in one week, had a ton of leftover pull-ups and gave them to us to use. So for now, her habit isn't too much of a financial burden on us. Thanks, Tiffany!

Sunburn

You may recall that Emily had a soccer game yesterday afternoon. Since we had so much to do in the morning before Emily's game (swimming lessons, bridging ceremony), I told Phil to make sure he put sunscreen on Katie when he was getting her dressed for her swimming lessons. Apparently, he either didn't hear me, or he was ignoring me, because he did not put any form of sunscreen on her.

I didn't realize that he hadn't done as I told him to until we were at Emily's soccer game and Katie's shoulders started getting pink and he asked me if I had any sunscreen in her diaper bag. I told him that I did not because he was supposed to have put it on her in the morning. That's when he told me that he hadn't put any on her when he got her dressed.

So, now my baby has her first sunburn.

Bronze

This morning we attended our Girl Scout Neighborhood Bridging Ceremony. Emily was bridging from Junior Girl Scouts to Cadette Girl Scouts. We actually didn't realize that Emily would be bridging this year until I received an email from our Girl Scout Council stating that the different levels of Girl Scouting would be changing age groups next year.

Besides bridging to Cadettes, Emily was also presented with her Bronze Award. The Bronze Award is the highest award that a Junior Girl Scout can earn. The project that she worked on to earn her Bronze Award was helping animals. She and some other girls from her troop worked on several service projects that benefit animals. They collected donations of pet food, pet toys, blankets, kitty litter, and other pet items. They also baked dog biscuits and made "happy socks" (baby socks stuffed with pillow stuffing and cat nip). Then they delivered all of their goods to the Humane Society and toured the facility.

After all of the Neighborhood awards and bridging ceremony, Emily's troop had their own End-of-Year award ceremony. We couldn't stay for that, though, because Emily had a soccer game to get to. So, her troop leader gave Emily her awards before the troop award ceremony so we could go ahead and leave.

Swimming Lessons

Katie had her first swimming lesson of the year this morning. She took swimming lessons last year with the same instructor. She did really well this morning, and her instructor was very impressed that she was being so calm. She did eventually start crying, but it was only for about the last five minutes of her lesson.

New Quiz

I found the white trash quiz on Holly's blog and decided to take it. Here are my results.

I am 19% White Trash.
Not at all White Trashy!
I, my friend, have class. I am so not white trash. . I am more than likely Democrat, and my place is neat, and there is a good chance I may never drink wine from a box.

It's pretty much dead-on, except that I am SO not a Democrat.

Impatient Drivers

Karlise just got me thinking about some very impatient drivers I've encountered in the past couple of days, so I thought I'd share my recent experiences with you, my loyal readers.

Yesterday, I was driving home from my mother's house. As I approached my street, I turned my turn signal on to indicate that I would be turning left at the next street. When I was actually in the middle of my turn, the guy who had been behind me on the street I was turning off of actually had the nerve to honk his horn at me. Seriously, was my turning that big of an offense to him? I must have inconvenienced him by slowing down a bit to take the turn at a reasonable speed.

This morning, when I was driving home from dropping Emily off at school, I had to make a right turn onto another street. The intersection has a traffic signal, and the road that I was on had the red light. So, when I came to the intersection, I came to a complete stop before I made my turn. Before my car had even finished shifting its weight from the stop I made, the person in line behind me was honking their horn at me. Excuse me if my following the traffic laws is inconveniencing you!

Do people not know that before you make your right-on-red turn, you are supposed to come to a complete stop? It doesn't seem to me like very many people do. Or if they do know, they are all just ignoring the law, apparently.

When my mother was in the hospital, her friend was complaining that she had just gotten a ticket for not coming to a complete stop before making a right-on-red. I said, "Well, if you hadn't been breaking the law, maybe you wouldn't have gotten a ticket." I gave her no sympathy at all, and told her that she deserved the ticket.

Red light runners really get me upset, too. Luckily, some of the worst intersections in my area are getting cameras installed that will photograph the red light runners and send them a ticket in the mail for the traffic offense. I wonder if having the cameras there will deter any of the usual offenders from continuing their red light running?

It Finally Happened

Guess who climbed out of her crib tonight? My little monkey!

I've been looking at toddler beds and bedding for a while, but it seems that the time has come to bite the bullet and make the now seemingly necessary changes.

Little Miss Attitude

Spectacled Sarah

I took Sarah to get some glasses last night at LensCrafters. It ended up being a larger than expected ordeal. I realized on my way to the mall that the lady at the Walmart optical, where I had purchased Sarah's contact lenses earlier in the day, had not given me back her prescription, which also had Sarah's eyeglass prescription written on it. So, I called Walmart on my way into the LensCrafters to have them fax Sarah's prescription to LensCrafters, thus eliminating the problem of not having it with me.

Except that it turned out to be not so easy. For some reason, the fax machine at LensCrafters wasn't working, so it couldn't receive the prescription. So, Sarah went ahead and picked out her glasses, and we had them take all of the measurements they would need so that when we went back with the hard copy of her prescription all they would need to do would be to enter it into their computer system and start on her glasses.

So, Sarah, Katie, and I all went back to LensCrafters today with her prescription that I picked up from Walmart last night. After about an hour and a half, they had Sarah's glasses ready for her. The frames she picked out are black and bright green. I tried to get her to go with the blue and brown ones, but she insisted on the first pair. Doesn't she look cute?

Concert

Monday night was Sarah's school's Spring Concert. Both the orchestra and the band performed for friends and relatives. The orchestra performed first and then had a cake and juice reception.

Sarah plays the violin in the advanced orchestra. They did a marvelous job with their music selections. The beginning orchestra performed first. It was amazing how big of a difference there was between the beginners and the advanced students. Last year, Sarah was a beginner, and this year she is one of the better violinists in her advanced orchestra. She's really come far this year.

I got an email from Sarah's orchestra teacher about a wonderful summer music class being offered at one of the local middle schools. There are two two-week sessions offered at a cost of $90 each. Students can choose one or both sessions. I feel this would be a wonderful opportunity for Sarah to not only keep the skills she's learned during this school year, but to improve her skills, as well.

Unfortunately, unless there is a change in our household income (like maybe getting some sort of child support again), I don't think I'll be able to afford to send her to either session. Of course, if anyone out there would like to donate* to this very worthy cause, please feel free to send me a check or make a donation via Paypal**.

*All donations will receive a photo and letter of thanks from Sarah.
**Paypal donations can be sent to mel0die@msn.com.

Busy & Tired

As you know, I've been pretty busy lately. I haven't even had time to post about all of the things I've had going on lately because I'm too busy.

So, I was really excited when I woke up this morning and checked my calendar and found that I had nothing scheduled for today. Other than just driving Emily to and from school, I had absolutely nowhere else to be.

I thought I'd have a nice relaxing day at home. A chance to do a little cleaning, a little television viewing, and a little catching up on my blog. I thought I might even be able to catch a little nap, too.

Well, none of that happened. Even Katie missed her nap at home and instead took one in a Walmart shopping cart. Granted, she did have a couple of blankets to curl up with, so it wasn't as bad as you might imagine, but it still wasn't as comfortable as being in her own bed.

So, now I've had another long, exhausting day, and I'm too tired to even share it all with you. Let's just say that it involved a lot of Walmart, a couple of opticals, and lots of Green Bags. And, oh yeah, one CRAZY mother! (Yes, mom, I'm talking about you.)

New Idea

You know how they have those "roach bombs"? Those things you buy when you have an insect problem in your house, and they fog your house and kill all of the insects while you're gone?

Why doesn't somebody invent a "Lysol bomb"? That way, instead of having to spray everything down individually and hurting your finger from holding the spray button down for so long, you could just set these things off around your house and then come back a few hours later to a germ-free house.

They could probably make a killing off of these things. I know I'd buy them. Some company needs to get to work on this idea pronto!

Not Again!

Do you see that?

Let's zoom in a little closer, shall we? Now do you see it?

That's right! Now that we're all feeling a bit better, Sarah comes down with a lovely case of conjunctivitis - more commonly known as "pink eye."

Now, don't get me wrong - I love Dr. Bob - but I am SO sick of seeing him, you have no idea! When he walked into the exam room, I said, "We've got to stop meeting like this." He said, "At least it's something different this time." He did have a point. No throat swabs or shots in the tushy this time.

When we left, Dr. Bob said, "See you later." I said, "I hope not." Then he said, "Well, I meant hopefully under different circumstances." I said, "That's better." Of course, with my luck, it won't be long before we're seeing each other for professional reasons again. Oy!

Busy Morning

It's another busy day for me today, but instead of being spread out over the day, it's all crammed together in the morning. I had a meeting with Emily's speech therapist scheduled for 7:45 this morning. That meant I had to get out of bed earlier than normal and put some make-up on and brush my teeth before taking Emily to school. As soon as I returned home from my meeting, I had to rush to get Sarah to school on time, and then wait around for her awards ceremony to begin.

In my meeting with Emily's speech therapist this morning, we basically just discussed Emily being released from speech therapy and went over her new IEP which will reflect that she no longer requires it. While Emily doesn't speak clearly in normal conversation, she has the ability to make all of her sounds correctly if she puts a little effort into it. If we kept her in speech therapy in sixth grade next year, she would have to miss a lot of her elective time, which I'd hate to take away from her. That's why we made the decision to end her services this year.

As I mentioned a few days ago, Sarah was given a notice that she would be receiving an award in the seventh grade awards ceremony this morning at her school. So, Katie and I went to watch the ceremony and see what award Sarah was being given. She ended up getting a certificate for her participation on the seventh grade Math League team.

Some of Sarah's friends got several awards, though. I sort of felt bad for Sarah that she didn't get something a bit more special, but then I thought that maybe she would see how hard some of her friends had worked to earn their awards and be inspired to work harder next year in school.

I took a few photos of Sarah and her friends this morning. Some of them aren't very good because my camera doesn't take very good photos from a distance under that school lighting.

Here is Sarah receiving her award.

Here is my beautiful daughter hiding her face from my camera as she walks back to her seat after receiving her award.

This is Sarah posing with her certificate so I could have just one decent photo of her smiling today.

This little girl is Sarah's friend, Rowan, who received six different awards this morning. She and Sarah have all of the same classes except for their elective (Sarah is in the orchestra and Rowan is in the band.), so apparently, she's the little award-hog we have to get rid of so Sarah can get some awards next year. Just kidding! We love Rowan.

Doctor Update

Well, our appointments went well today. My appointment with my OB/GYN was great. I really love my doctor and I miss him in between visits. Last year, we joked about me getting pregnant again so we could spend more time together like we had when I was pregnant with Katie. He told me today that one thing that he doesn't like about his job is that when his patients are pregnant, he gets to see them a lot and develop a relationship with them, but once they deliver, he only sees them once a year for their annual exams.

Another thing that happened while I was at the doctor today was that the nurse who did my pre-exam testing (weight, BP, etc.) said that I was coming up on thirty-five and that I needed to go in for a baseline mammogram. I told her that I was NOT coming up on thirty-five, that I hadn't even reached my half-birthday yet, so I was still closer to thirty-four. She said that she was still going to give me the Rx to get it done, but that if I wanted to hold onto it until I actually turned thirty-five, that I could wait to have it done. My doctor said that he didn't think I needed to have it done this year, but that he would go ahead and sign the Rx in case I wanted to. I doubt I'll be getting that done anytime soon, though.

As for my mother's cardiology appointment, there really isn't much to tell. The doctor just basically asked her how she was feeling and told her that she can be as active as she wants, so long as she doesn't overdo it and get winded. He told her that he wants her to keep taking her meds as she has been and to come back in a month for another echocardiogram to see if her heart is getting stronger. He also told her that she still needs to avoid stress at all costs.

Doctor Day

This morning, I have my appointment for my annual GYN exam. And this afternoon, I have to take my mother to her cardiology appointment. Now that I think about it, I probably should have waited to finish reading that book since I'll be spending so much time in waiting rooms today!

Oh, well. Off to shave my legs!

Happy Mothers Day - Part Two

Happy Mothers Day to all of my wonderful mommy friends! I love you all!

And extra special Mothers Day wishes for my friends, Ann, who is celebrating her first Mothers Day as a mommy, and Michelle, who is my girls' Godmother.

And, last but not least, Happy Mothers Day to my own mommy. I love you!

Escape

I finished the book. I really enjoyed it. I won't tell you what happened since some of my friends are still reading it (or haven't even started it). I wasn't sure what to expect because the reviews from people on Amazon.com were that the book was either really good or really bad. But it held my attention and I had a difficult time putting it down, so I guess that means it was good enough for me.

Happy Mothers Day

It's 4:30 in the afternoon, and I'm still in my pajamas. Yep, it's been a pretty good day so far. While I didn't get any expensive gifts, I did get to stay in bed for as long as I wanted to and read or sleep. I'm thinking of going back to bed to read for a while until my dinner is ready for me.

The book I am reading, Escape by Carolyn Jessop, is a wonderful Mothers Day read. It is about a woman who was brought up in a polygamous culture and about how she finally escapes with her children. Throughout her horrible marriage, her only thoughts were of her children and how to protect them. She decides to take her children and flee the FLDS so that they can have a chance at living happy lives.

Tyrant Toddler

Katie has been so demanding lately. Ever since she started learning to talk, she's been quite the bossy little thing. But things have gotten worse lately.

We babied her quite a bit when she was sick and pretty much gave in to every little request she made because she was so miserably ill. But now that she's feeling better, she seems to think that we're still going to just give in to her every little demand.

She thinks that she can boss us all around, too. She's always been pretty bossy with Emily, which we thought was funny that she would single Emily out like that, but now she thinks she can boss us all around.

When we don't do what she wants, she threatens us with a spanking, which sounds more like she's offering us bacon. "Do you want a spanking?" sounds more like, "Want bacon?" She so cute when she does this that it's hard to keep from laughing at her.

I am over this little attitude of hers, though, so I guess I have to get over how cute she is and lay down the law. Wish me luck.

Award

This afternoon, Sarah brought home an invitation to an awards ceremony. Apparently, she is going to receive an award next Tuesday morning. For what, we don't yet know. I guess that will be a surprise for us. I can't wait to find out!

Of course, I'll update you all, too, after the ceremony. Hopefully, I'll remember to bring my camera with me so I'll have photos to share, too.

Friends & Yardwork

I found out this morning that the best way to do yard work is with friends. Sure, it's still hot, sweaty, dirty work, but it just doesn't seem as bad when you've got friends to help you and chat with you while you're doing it.

The moms group that I'm in just recently started a new "Moms Helping Moms" thing where one mom is chosen each month to have the other moms help her out with a project of her choosing. Last month, my friend Julie got to have some help cleaning her cabinets. Today was my turn, and I had some wonderful ladies come over to help me rake and bag leaves.

My friends Heather, Holly, Andrea, and Karen came over to work on my yard. Heather, Andrea, and Karen brought their little boys with them to play with Katie while we worked on the yard.

Here are a few before pics, courtesy of Andrea* and her awesome camera.

And a few pics from while we were working...

And, of course, the after pics...

After all of the work was done, we were all completely filthy. The kids had gotten a nice covering of dirt, too. So, once all of the lovely ladies were gone, I went to give Katie a bath. Since I was so hot, sweaty, and dirty, I decided not to wait to take a shower until after Katie's bath and just got in with her. Katie quite enjoyed that, and we both got clean.

All in all, it was a good day. Katie and I both had fun this morning, and we both took nice long naps after lunch, too. Thank you so much, ladies, for coming over and helping me out this morning. You are all such wonderful friends!

*Unfortunately, there are no photos of Andrea since she was behind the camera.
